Class 4 Roofs

What this involves.

If you are replacing a roof anyway, you do not have to put back the same shingle that was there before. In North Texas, where hail comes around most years, impact resistance is worth considering on its own merits, and it may also change what you pay for insurance.

Roofing materials are tested for impact resistance and classified from Class 1 through Class 4. The test drops steel balls of increasing size onto the material, and a Class 4 product is one that survives the largest ball without cracking. It is the highest impact rating a roofing product can carry. A Class 4 shingle can still be damaged by very large hail, but it holds up to the ordinary storms that wear down a standard shingle a little more every season.

How It Works

01

Free inspection

We inspect the roof and the exterior and document any damage with photos and notes.

02

You decide on the claim

If there is storm damage worth filing for, we help you understand what to tell your carrier. The decision is yours.

03

Adjuster and scope

We can meet the adjuster on site, review the carrier’s estimate against our findings, and send supplements for anything it missed.

04

The new roof

Once the scope is agreed and you sign, our own employees install your new roof.

The Difference

What to know before you decide.

Some carriers offer premium credits or discounts for qualifying impact-resistant roofs. The amount varies by carrier and policy, and nobody should assume a Class 4 roof automatically earns a set percentage. Before you choose a material, call your insurance agent and ask: does my carrier offer an impact-resistant roof discount, which Class 4 products qualify, what would the estimated annual savings be, does the credit apply to the whole policy or only part of it, and what documentation do you need after installation?

That call can change which roof makes the most financial sense. Comparing roofs only by installation price leaves out most of the math. A fuller comparison includes the installation cost, the expected lifespan, the hail resistance, your current deductible, how your insurer treats the existing roof, depreciation over time, any Class 4 discount, the manufacturer warranty, the contractor warranty, and the likelihood of another North Texas hailstorm.

The best time to decide is before a storm claim is settled. When the carrier is paying to replace a damaged roof, the difference in cost for an upgraded shingle is usually yours to pay, and it is far smaller than the cost of a whole roof. We price both options at the inspection so you can compare them side by side.

Roof age matters here too. Many carriers pay less on older roofs by settling them at actual cash value. A new impact-resistant roof starts that clock over with a material built to take more hits before it needs replacing.

Before You Call

Class 4 Roofs, answered.

What is a Class 4 roof?

A roof built from materials that passed the highest impact-resistance test, where steel balls are dropped onto the material without it cracking. Class 4 is the top of a Class 1 to Class 4 scale.

Will a Class 4 roof lower my insurance?

It may. Some carriers offer a premium credit for a qualifying roof, and the amount varies. Ask your agent which products qualify and what the savings would be.

Is a Class 4 roof hail-proof?

No roof is. A Class 4 roof resists far more impact than a standard shingle, but very large hail can still damage it.

Does insurance pay for the upgrade?

Usually the carrier pays to replace what was there, and the difference for an upgraded shingle is yours. We price both so you can compare.
